Definitions of Intrafaith, Multifaith and Interfaith

What is Intrafaith? Intrafaith is a gathering of people from within a particular faith tradition. For example, a Christian intrafaith gathering may include people from various Christian denominations such as Anglican, Catholic, Uniting, Presbyterian, Baptist, Orthodox, Pentecostal and Lutheran.

What is Multifaith? Multifaith is a gathering of people from different faith traditions. These gatherings may be for a specific reason such as a multicultural festival aimed at bringing the community together. At these events each faith tradition is represented in turn.

What is Interfaith? Interfaith is a gathering of people of different faith traditions with the aim of establishing ongoing relationships through dialogue. Dialogue can explore both commonalities & differences. For example, at the core of each faith tradition there are common human values such as love, peace, truth, tolerance and respect. Differences can also be acknowledged, helping faith traditions better understand each other’s customs and beliefs.
